Alpert Studio Violinists Win Orchestra Posts

By billalpert | Student News , violin

Kudos to two young Alpert Studio violinists who successfully auditioned as violinists for local orchestras!

Eleven year old Jessica Chao won a competitive and coveted seat in the Claremont Young Musicians Intermezzo Orchestra. The orchestra, founded in 1992, is an 80 member full symphony orchestra for the intermediate level orchestral player ages 9 to 17. The repertoire last season included original compositions such as Egmont Overture by Beethoven, Danse Macabre by Saint-Saens, John Henry by Copland, Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 by Grieg.

Violinist Sarah Pastor successfully auditioned for an assistant principal chair in the Claremont Youth Symphony Orchestra. During the 2011-12 season, the CYSO was composed of 60 students ranging in age from 9 to 21 (fourth grade through college). Members represented 31 different schools in 16 communities: Claremont, Alta Loma, Baldwin Park, Chino, Chino Hills, Corona, Covina, Diamond Bar, Glendora, Hacienda Heights, La Verne, Loma Linda, Ontario, Pomona, Rancho Cucamonga, and Upland.

Congratulations are due to both Sarah and Jessica. Be sure to support them by attending their orchestra performances at Bridges Hall in Claremont.

Romeo, Juliet, Love, Work and Music: A Valentine’s Day Message

By billalpert | Bill Alpert Journal , violin

Last week I played Romeo and Juliet, a piece about love. It’s music I first played in a youth orchestra more than 40 years ago. To me today, the Tchaik is about more than romantic love…

It’s about love and passion for your work. Performing that overture was a huge challenge for a high school aged violinist. Last week I had the pleasure of working with a stand partner half my age, but with obvious great devotion to music and the craft of playing the violin.

It all brought me back to the start, and why I became a musician in the first place. It’s the love of the music, love of the violin and love for doing the work, just for the simple joy of it.

So to all my friends and readers who are musicians, may your Valentine’s Day be blessed with love in your personal life, as well as a renewed and great passion for the art you create every time you practice, perform or teach.

And to my friends not lucky enough to be musicians, may you find art and beauty wherever your life takes you. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Don’t Just Sing: First Graduates

By billalpert | Student News , Studio News , voice

2010 Alpert Studio Master Class Participants

Danny Gurwin, Brandon Alpert and Don’t Just Sing Graduates

It’s truly exciting to see the growth of professional level skills in young performers, especially in a short six week span. That’s just what happened in these intensive sessions; each performer brought new life and new excitement to their song performances. Forging this strong connection between acting and singing is the mark of a mature performer. But it’s astonishing to see it in a 13 year old.

As teachers, we seek to cultivate the patience and skills that give even the youngest students the ability to master both the technical and artistic challenges of performance. It’s a rewarding process for those who value personal growth as well as the arts.

Kudos to our first Don’t Just Sing, Say Something master class graduates! The class was a hit all around! Look for more such classes in the near future.
