Don’t Just Sing: First Graduates

By billalpert | Student News , Studio News , voice

2010 Alpert Studio Master Class Participants

Danny Gurwin, Brandon Alpert and Don’t Just Sing Graduates

It’s truly exciting to see the growth of professional level skills in young performers, especially in a short six week span. That’s just what happened in these intensive sessions; each performer brought new life and new excitement to their song performances. Forging this strong connection between acting and singing is the mark of a mature performer. But it’s astonishing to see it in a 13 year old.

As teachers, we seek to cultivate the patience and skills that give even the youngest students the ability to master both the technical and artistic challenges of performance. It’s a rewarding process for those who value personal growth as well as the arts.

An Evening at Disney Hall

By billalpert | Studio News

A cast of hundreds including studio student Cesar Quintero perform at Disney Hall

You couldn’t help but be inspired. The dramatic sweep of Vaughan Williams‘ 20th century cantata, Dona Nobis Pacem, covers the range of emotions from tender to majestic. To be in the middle of hundreds of soaring voices and full orchestra in the acoustically perfect setting of Walt Disney Concert Hall is an experience not to be forgotten.

Indeed, studio student Cesar Quintero was in the middle of it all, along with the Festival Choir and Orchestra of the Idyllwild Music Festival. It was a performance worthy of any concert hall in the world. And it was more impressive in light of the fact that this young ensemble of students could create such a polished performance of what is a very complex and technically brilliant concert piece.

Kudos to Cesar, along with the Idyllwild faculty and student body for their efforts. It was truly in inspirational evening.

I would also like to recognize Kaitlin Orr and Michael Sturgis for their wonderful performances at the event. I’m sure any judge would have had a difficult time deciding the final outcome. I’m proud of you all!

Competition winners received either cash or a full paid scholarship for two week programs at the Idyllwild Summer Academy for the Arts. Again, congratulations to all participants and a special thank you to Dr. Andrew Crane, Rebecca Tomlinson and the Cal State San Bernardino music faculty for making this such a positive and rewarding experience for young musicians.

Congrats to newly accepted OCHSA freshmen

Every Alpert Studio Student who recently applied to attend the Orange County High School for the Arts was accepted! Kudos to Sarah Hinrichsen, Michael Sturgis, Mercedes Machado and Kaitlin Orr. Again, you have done me proud!
